Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on 22nd August to explore strategies for enhancing bilateral relations. Modi, who arrived in Poland on 21st August, is embarking on a two-nation tour, with his next stop being Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.
Prime Minister Modi's visit marks the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in 45 years. Upon arrival, he was warmly greeted with a ceremonial red-carpet welcome at the Chancellery before engaging in discussions.
"A new landmark in the India-Poland partnership! PM @narendramodi was warmly received by PM @donaldtusk of Poland at the Federal Chancellery in Warsaw and accorded a ceremonial welcome."
"This visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland after 45 years will impart fresh momentum to the India-Poland partnership," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X. "Finally. After 45 years! Prime Minister @narendramodi, good to see you in Warsaw," Donald Tusk posted on X.
The meeting takes place as PM Modi heads to Ukraine for high-level discussions amid the ongoing conflict. Poland, sharing a border with Ukraine, has expressed concern over the two-year war and has provided political, humanitarian, and defense support to Kyiv. This year marks 70 years of official bilateral relations between India and Poland. Trade between the two nations has surged from $1.95 billion in 2013 to $5.72 billion in 2023, with India's exports comprising a significant portion of this growth.
The last high-level visits were by then-Indian President Pratibha Patil to Poland in 2009 and Polish PM Donald Tusk to India in 2010 during his first term.
