On the state's foundation day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that his government will prioritise addressing the nine requests made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The state administration is dedicated to making sure that these priorities propel future advancement, and the demands of both residents and visitors will be at the heart of Uttarakhand's development plans, Dhami stated. He stated that Prime Minister Modi has demonstrated his commitment to Uttarakhand by showing concern for preserving the state’s dialect, and language, and addressing migration issues.
According to a government release, the state government will treat the prime minister’s ‘nine requests’ as a guiding framework for Uttarakhand's development. In his video message on Saturday, commemorating Uttarakhand's Silver Jubilee year, Prime Minister Modi made five appeals to the residents of the state and four to the tourists and pilgrims visiting the area. He encouraged the people of Uttarakhand to safeguard their cultural heritage by passing on local dialects such as Garhwali, Kumauni, and Jaunsari to future generations.
Additionally, he urged people to visit villages frequently, turn ancient houses into "home stays" for additional revenue, plant "one tree in the name of mother" to combat climate change and preserve the environment, and promote water cleanliness by conserving sources. Prime Minister Modi urged tourists visiting Uttarakhand to avoid using single-use plastics in the Himalayas, to allocate at least 5 per cent of their travel budget for purchasing local products as part of the ‘Vocal for local’ initiative, and to adhere to traffic regulations while respecting the sanctity of pilgrimage sites.
He highlighted that these efforts are focused on enhancing the local community and promoting environmental sustainability. Prime Minister Modi also urged tourists visiting Uttarakhand to refrain from using single-use plastics in the Himalayas, allocate at least 5 per cent of their travel expenses toward local products as part of the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, adhere to traffic rules, and uphold the sanctity of pilgrimage sites.
The chief minister stated that the state government would shape its policies according to Prime Minister Modi's requests, aiming to implement each with public support. Uttarakhand has emerged as a major tourist destination, with a significant increase in visitor numbers. In 2023, the state saw 5.96 crore visitors, marking a 61.79 per cent rise since 2018. By August this year, nearly 3 crore tourists had already visited, with expectations that the total will exceed 6 crore by December.
