Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Assam on February 14, 2026 and inaugurated several development projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure, connectivity, education, digital support and public transport in the state. These initiatives are part of government efforts to boost growth in Assam and the entire Northeast region as the Assembly elections approach.
During his visit, PM Modi inaugurated and launched several key projects that will impact people’s daily lives and contribute to Assam’s long-term development.
One of the most important projects Mr Modi inaugurated was the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, a new six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River near Guwahati. Built at a cost of around ₹3,030 crore, this bridge is the first of its kind in Northeast India with an extradosed design that makes it strong and suitable for the region’s seismic conditions.
The bridge connects Guwahati with North Guwahati, greatly improving travel between the two sides. Earlier, crossing the river could take a long time because of heavy traffic and limited bridges. With this new bridge, travel time is expected to be cut to around seven minutes, making daily commuting smoother and faster for thousands of people.
It is also equipped with a Bridge Health Monitoring System, which can help detect structural issues early and ensure safety over time.
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in the Northeast, located at Moran in the Dibrugarh district. This facility is built along a section of national highway that has been strengthened and extended to act as a runway in case of emergencies.
This new facility can be used by both the Indian Air Force and civilian aircraft during emergencies or special operations. It enhances the military’s readiness in the region and can also help during times of natural disasters when conventional airports might be unavailable.
The ELF is part of a broader aim to improve strategic infrastructure in Assam, especially in the face of evolving security and logistics needs.
Another major project inaugurated by PM Modi was the National Data Centre (NDC) for the Northeastern states. Though the inauguration was done virtually, it is a significant step in boosting digital infrastructure in the region.
Located in Amingaon in the Kamrup district, this data centre has advanced technology that allows government departments to store data securely, run digital applications smoothly, and ensure services remain uninterrupted even in emergencies. It also acts as a disaster recovery centre for other government data systems.
This facility will help the state and region handle digital tasks more efficiently, support e-governance, and safeguard important data.
PM Modi also inaugurated the temporary campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati. This will be only the second IIM in the Northeast region, with the first being IIM Shillong.
The new IIM is approved by the Centre and is expected to provide top-quality management education to students in Assam and surrounding states. It will help more young people in the region access good education and increase opportunities for future careers in business, administration, and leadership.
Being the 22nd IIM in the country, this institute marks an important milestone in improving the education landscape of Assam.
To improve public transport and reduce pollution, the Prime Minister flagged off 225 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. These buses are part of an effort to make city travel cleaner and more reliable for passengers.
Out of the 225 buses, 100 are allocated for Guwahati, while the rest are going to cities like Nagpur, Bhavnagar, and Chandigarh.
This project is expected to benefit more than 50 lakh people by offering access to eco-friendly public transport that is affordable and comfortable. It aligns with broader efforts to reduce emissions and promote sustainable urban mobility across different parts of India.
Speaking to BJP supporters and workers, Prime Minister Modi said the party believes that serving people is its biggest responsibility. He also paid respects to Maa Kamakhya and spoke about the funds given by the Centre to Assam over the last decade.
He said, “Congress didn’t develop the state without providing funds for Assam’s growth,” while highlighting that Assam has received more than ₹5.5 lakh crore from the central government during the past 11 years.
Modi also spoke about the government’s focus on infrastructure, especially in the Northeast. He said, “This time, more importance has been given to connectivity in the Northeast in the budget. Therefore, thousands of crores have been allocated for highway construction.” He added that Assam has huge tourism potential and said, “In terms of tourism, there is no better place than Assam. Highways are being constructed where both vehicles and aircraft can land.”
The Prime Minister strongly criticised the Congress party and urged people to remain cautious about its promises. He said, “Poor people gain merit by having a home, toilet, and clean drinking water. Every worker at the BJP booths is a participant in this merit.”
Continuing his criticism, Modi added, “Congress, which does not respect Mother India, cannot work for the nation’s interest.” He also spoke about the past situation in the Northeast, saying, “During Congress’s time, the entire Northeastern region lived in fear, and buying supplies for the army meant committing scams.”
All the projects inaugurated by PM Modi are part of wider plans to improve life in Assam and the greater Northeast region. Better roads and bridges help trade and daily commuting. Digital centres help government services work faster and more securely. Education initiatives open doors for young people, while green transport supports environmental goals.
These developments come at a time when Assam is preparing for Assembly elections, and the focus on infrastructure and public services shows an effort to strengthen growth and opportunities in the state ahead of voting.
