Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged young Indians to “dream big, think differently, and be fearless”, saying they have the potential to address global challenges and contribute to India’s development. During his Tamil Nadu visit, he unveiled projects worth ₹13,000 crore and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to the state’s growth.
Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai, Modi encouraged students to trust their abilities and use available opportunities to contribute to the Viksit Bharat vision.
“Today the world is looking for solutions, and you have the potential to provide them… There is infinite opportunity in India today. I urge all of you here to give yourselves a chance to be fearless. Work on your ideas. Dream big, think differently, and be fearless,” he said.
Modi also reiterated his slogan, “We will do it”, urging citizens to work towards making India a developed nation by 2047. He outlined goals including becoming one of the world’s top three economies, achieving self-reliance, establishing India as a global manufacturing hub, hosting the Olympics and sending an Indian to the Moon.
Earlier, Modi virtually unveiled projects worth ₹13,000 crore across railways, roads and ports at IIT Madras. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Union Minister L Murugan and senior officials attended the event.
“As a CM, I understood the expectations of a state. After becoming PM, not only did I try to fulfil the aspirations but also made efforts so that the states met their aspiration goals,” Modi said.
Reaffirming his commitment to Tamil Nadu, Modi referred to his work with former chief ministers J Jayalalithaa, O Panneerselvam, Edappadi K Palaniswami and MK Stalin.
“Governments may change, but my resolve for Tamil Nadu’s development remains steadfast. With this determination to serve people, together with CM Vijay, we are taking forward the development of the state,” he said.
Modi also highlighted Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing sector and small industries, citing initiatives such as Make in India and Vocal for Local.
Vijay thanked Modi for the projects but sought the release of ₹5,110 crore in pending central funds under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) without conditions.
“Under the SSA scheme, an amount of ₹5,110 crore of the central share is due to Tamil Nadu. I request the Government of India to release the amount without any conditionalities,” Vijay said.
He also urged the Centre to declare the Godavari-Cauvery river-linking project a national project to improve water availability in southern states.
Modi inaugurated the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. The 15-km stretch includes 11 elevated stations under Corridor 4. Modi and Vijay flagged off the services and travelled on the train.
Highlighting the importance of public transport, Modi said, “Public transport plays a massive role in this. Public transport systems must be excellent, as this increases the ease of living.”
He added that metro services had expanded from five cities in 2014 to 25 cities nationwide. Vijay also sought early approval for Chennai Metro Phase 3, including the Airport-Kilambakkam and Poonamallee-Sunguvarchatram corridors.
