Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday to review bilateral ties and discuss regional and international developments. The two leaders discussed cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas.
Modi described the conversation as “productive” in a post on X. He said the two sides agreed to maintain close engagement to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
“Had a productive conversation with President Trump. We reviewed our bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas. We agreed to maintain close engagement to take our Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership forward,” he wrote.
The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues. The discussion included ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security.
The conversation came a day after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke about the changing nature of India-US relations and the broader global diplomatic landscape. Speaking at an event organised by the Asia Society in New York, Jaishankar said the United States had earlier expected India to limit its diplomatic options and focus primarily on its relationship with Washington.
Jaishankar made the remarks during a discussion with Daniel Russel, a former US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He said that expectation had now shifted towards a more open approach, with countries increasingly maintaining relationships with multiple partners.
“There was once a narrative in America that we don’t like India having too many options. We want you to focus on your relationship with us even though America kept its options open. Today that pretence has dropped,” he said.
Jaishankar said countries were now “openly dealing with everybody else”. He linked the change towards a multipolar world. According to him, the global diplomatic environment is increasingly allowing countries to engage with several major powers while retaining their strategic choices.
His comments came as India and the US continue discussions across several areas, including trade, defence, energy and technology. Modi and Trump’s latest conversation covered these areas as part of their broader engagement.
The Prime Minister’s statement did not provide details of any specific decisions or agreements reached during the conversation. It said the two sides would maintain close engagement to advance their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
