Prime Minister Narendra Modi intensified the political campaign in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming state elections by launching a strong attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Addressing a large public rally in Purba Bardhaman on Saturday, he promised strict legal action against what he described as the TMC “syndicate.” He said a BJP-led government would take firm steps to investigate and act against alleged corruption in the state.
During his speech, Modi announced that his party would release a “white paper” to present a detailed account of alleged corruption during the 15 years of TMC rule. He directly accused the party’s leadership, including ministers and MLAs, of being involved in systematic wrongdoing. Emphasising accountability, he said, “BJP will bring a white paper to ensure a legal accounting of corruption involving TMC's MLAs, ministers, and syndicates. It will present a full account of the government's 15 years. Under a BJP government, strict action will be taken to stop every such crime.”
The Prime Minister also expressed confidence in his party’s electoral prospects. He pointed to the large turnout and active participation of women at his rallies as a sign of growing support. Referring to past voting patterns, he said that areas with strong participation by women have often resulted in a significant mandate for the BJP-led NDA. “Wherever there is heavy voting and strong participation by women, the BJP-NDA has received a massive mandate. In Keralam, the situation is such that both LDF and UDF are not even claiming victory. In Bengal too, BJP is steadily moving towards victory. Your enthusiasm and energy ensure success,” he said.
In a major move aimed at attracting women voters, Modi announced a financial assistance scheme. He promised that women in the state would receive ₹3,000 per month if the BJP comes to power. This announcement is seen as a key part of the party’s strategy to appeal to a voter group that has traditionally supported Mamata Banerjee and the TMC. Stressing his commitment, he said, “Seeing Bengal's growing support for BJP, TMC is in panic and is misleading people with lies. You can be certain that BJP will shut down their shop of corruption. I have especially come to assure all the sisters and daughters of Bengal that BJP has announced Rs 3,000 per month for women.”
Modi also accused the TMC of spreading misinformation about BJP’s intentions regarding existing welfare schemes. He clarified that his party would not stop any schemes but would instead improve their implementation by removing middlemen. He said the BJP aims to ensure that benefits reach people directly without corruption. Reinforcing this point, he stated, “Seeing the love of Bengal's people for the BJP, TMC has gone into panic mode. That's why TMC is lying to you. TMC is saying that if BJP comes, this scheme will be stopped, that scheme will be stopped. The truth is that BJP won't stop anything... BJP will only shut down the shop of corruption, stop their (TMC's) loot.”
The rally took place at a crucial time as West Bengal prepares for assembly elections scheduled on April 23 and 29, with counting set for May 4. The political contest has become more intense compared to previous years.
In the 2021 elections, the TMC won a decisive victory with 213 seats, while the BJP increased its presence significantly by winning 77 seats. This growth has set the stage for a high-stakes electoral battle between the two parties.
Overall, Modi’s speech focused on corruption, governance, and welfare promises. By combining allegations against the TMC with financial commitments for women, the BJP is trying to strengthen its position in the state. The upcoming elections are expected to be closely watched as both parties aim to secure a strong mandate from the voters.
