Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the inaugural meeting of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANFS) held on Tuesday. The newly established foundation will serve as an apex body to provide high-level strategic guidance towards scientific research in compliance with the National Education Policy (NEP) recommendations.
The meeting was attended by senior officials and dignitaries including Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, government’s Principal Scientific Advisor Ajay Kumar Sood and others. Established with the approach of revolutionising research and development (R&D), it will help nurture, promote, and foster research culture and innovation across various colleges and universities throughout the country.
A multi-institutional program titled ‘Partnerships for Accelerated Innovation and Research’ (PAIR) is set to be launched which will establish a partnership between top-tier institutions and academic institutions with limited research capabilities. It will provide a platform for an unprecedented level of collaboration that fosters transformational research. ANRF would facilitate this through the funding of high-quality research via a Hub and Spoke framework using a mentorship model.
The PAIR program was one of the major projects that was unveiled. Through a Hub and Spoke structure, this multi-institutional project will promote transformative research by facilitating collaboration between elite institutions and those with inadequate research capacity. The program's objectives are to effectively disseminate a research culture throughout institutions and to methodically improve research excellence.
The announcement of the Mission for Advancement in High-impact Areas (MAHA) was another noteworthy endeavour. Research in important areas that are solution-focused and prioritised will be the main emphasis of this mission-mode program. MAHA's first focus will be on advanced materials and EV mobility with the goal of addressing scientific problems and pushing technological boundaries.
The ANRF Centre of Excellence (ACE) program was launched to further enhance India's research capabilities. By providing funds for the creation of the greatest Centres of Excellence, ACE seeks to promote scientific temper in India. It will serve as a top-notch research environment with unmatched amenities that encourage ambitious and creative research initiatives. In order to promote scientific excellence and sustain a thriving ecosystem of research and development, the ANRF's large program inherently comes with enhanced funding for fundamental research. To put it briefly, its goal would be to oversee a conducive research atmosphere while utilising the nation's wide range of skilled individuals.
The foundation was founded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation Act of 2023 with the goal of advancing an innovative and research-oriented culture throughout the nation.
