On Sunday, March 1, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a significant development and cultural visit to Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, marked by the inauguration and foundation-laying of large-scale projects worth over ₹2,700 crore and a spiritual visit to a historic temple in Madurai. The day underscored the Centre’s focus on infrastructure, economic growth, spiritual engagement, and regional outreach as part of broader national development efforts.
In Puducherry, PM Modi formally inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a diverse range of development works aimed at strengthening the Union Territory’s infrastructure, services and economy. These initiatives, valued at more than ₹2,700 crore, span critical sectors including transportation, urban amenities, industry, education and healthcare.
Among the key elements launched were the e-bus services under the PM e-Bus Seva Initiative, which are designed to introduce cleaner, modern public transport options in the region. The prime minister also dedicated to the nation the Integrated Command and Control Centre under the Smart City Mission and tenements for economically weaker sections built under the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) programme. Government-led sewerage and water supply projects were also inaugurated to improve basic services for residents.
PM Modi also inaugurated important infrastructure at educational and healthcare institutions. At the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Karaikal, he opened the Composite Engineering Block – Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Block and the Ganga Hostel, facilities expected to enhance technical education and student accommodation. The Regional Cancer Centre at JIPMER was marked for modernisation, and new academic buildings and hostels were unveiled at Pondicherry University, reflecting a focus on expanding quality education and healthcare infrastructure.
The prime minister also dedicated the 750-acre Karasur-Sedarapet Industrial Estate, set to house a Pharma Park, Textile Park, IT Park, an IIT Madras R&D centre, and advanced healthcare facilities linked to JIPMER, which together aim to create jobs and attract investment.
As part of rural development, PM Modi laid the foundation for water supply works to improve drinking water access and the construction of 41 rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Additional projects encompass the restoration of mangroves under the MISHTI initiative, development of the Heritage Town area, enhanced sanitation and drainage networks, and power sector upgrades under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
Capital investment works under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme were also launched, following the Centre’s approval to include Puducherry in a programme originally meant for states, unlocking greater funding for common infrastructure.
In his address during the Puducherry event, the prime minister reflected on progress since his previous visit, reminding the crowd of the “BEST Puducherry” vision he had laid out earlier, where “BEST” stands for Business, Education, Spirituality and Tourism. He said this mantra was starting to bear fruit, adding, “These projects will transform the lives of the people of Puducherry”. He also criticised opposition parties, alleging that their earlier governance had hindered growth, and stressed that the double-engine NDA government was bringing renewed momentum to development.
After completing the schedule in Puducherry, PM Modi travelled to Madurai in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, where in the late afternoon he visited the ancient Arulmigu Subramaniyaswamy Temple at Tirupparankundram, a sacred shrine dedicated to Bhagwan Murugan and one of the deity’s legendary abodes.
During the visit, he offered prayers and sought divine blessings for peace, prosperity and the well-being of all citizens. On the official Prime Minister’s Office social media account, he shared the devotional invocation “Vetrivel Muruganukku Arogara!” and wrote, “Prayed at the Arulmigu Subramaniyaswamy Temple, Thirupparankundram, Madurai. Sought blessings for peace, prosperity and the well-being of all. May Lord Murugan always guide us with strength, courage and wisdom.”
The temple visit came amid heightened attention around a long-standing local issue over the right to light a ceremonial lamp atop a pillar at the temple site, a matter that had seen legal and political debate in recent months. Regardless, the prime minister’s worship at the revered shrine featured amid his broader efforts to emphasise cultural heritage, spiritual inclusivity and public engagement during his southern India visits.
Overall, OM Modi’s engagements on this day reflected a blend of development-oriented governance and cultural symbolism, with large-scale project launches aimed at economic and social uplift in Puducherry, followed by a spiritual homage in Madurai, underscoring the symbolism of growth, heritage and national unity.
