Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel. Both leaders held a discussion on the need for peace in West Asia. President Pezeshkian outlined India’s potential role in de-escalating role conflict in the Middle East due to its strong ties with all parties involved.
The two leaders concentrated on enhancing collaboration in important domains like the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Chabahar Port. Modi called the meeting fruitful, pointing out that they discussed ways to strengthen relationships, especially in future-focused fields, and assessed bilateral relations.
This was the first meeting between Modi and Pezeshkian since Pezeshkian became the Iranian leader in July, after the sudden death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the discussion as "fruitful," noting that Prime Minister Modi shared deep concerns about the growing conflict in West Asia. He emphasised the need to protect civilians and encouraged dialogue to help reduce tensions.
“Both leaders (PM Modi and Iranian President Pezeshkian) also discussed the situation in West Asia. PM Modi expressed his deep concern over the escalating conflict and reiterated India’s call for the protection of civilians and prevention of harm to civilians. He emphasised the need for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions,” said Misri.
Additionally, Pezeshkian emphasised the significance of regional peace and recognised India's role in defusing tensions. In addition to congratulating Pezeshkian on his recent election win, Modi welcomed Iran's accession to the BRICS and reiterated India's commitment to deepening its relationship with Iran.
Both leaders emphasised how important the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) are for improving regional connectivity and trade. They specifically mentioned their significance for Afghanistan's rebuilding efforts and trade with Central Asia. Additionally, they discussed the current situation in Afghanistan, highlighting the necessity for stability and ongoing humanitarian assistance.
President Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for India's support in helping Iran join international organisations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS. In response, Modi invited Pezeshkian to visit India, and he accepted the invitation. The ongoing Israel-Hamas war and Israel-Hezbollah conflict, which have seen escalating tensions, provided a backdrop for the discussion.
In addition, Israel is preparing to strike back at Iran after a missile strike earlier this month. India is still concerned about the unstable state of affairs in West Asia and is calling for a restoration of diplomatic relations and dialogue in order to achieve long-term peace and stability.
