Delivering the national statement at the COP26 global climate summit in Glasgow, PM Narendra Modi said India will achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 to mitigate climate change.
"India is the only country that is delivering in 'letter and spirit' on the Paris Declaration commitments on tackling climate change," PM Modi said.
The PM also called upon developed economies to make $1 trillion available for climate financing. “India expects developed countries to make $1 trillion available as climate finance as soon as possible. As we track the progress of climate mitigation, we must also track climate finance. Justice would truly be served if pressure is put on those countries that have not lived up to their climate finance commitments,” said PM Modi as quoted by PTI.
India, which is home to 17 per cent of the world's population, accounts for only about 5 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Glasgow. He reiterated that India is working very hard on tackling climate change-related issues.
Here are the five commitments made by PM Modi at COP26 Glasgow Summit:
- India will achieve net-zero emissions by 2070
- India will bring its non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030
- India will bring its economy's carbon intensity down to 45 per cent by 2030
- India will fulfill 50 per cent of its energy requirement through renewable energy by 2030
- India will reduce 1 billion tonnes of carbon emissions from the total projected emissions by 2030
He termed these five commitments as "panchamrit". He referred this “panchamrit” as a gift to the world from India.
“In the midst of this global brainstorming on climate change, on behalf of India, I would like to present five nectar elements, Panchamrit, to deal with this challenge,” Modi said.
PM Modi also called out all the countries for a global movement for sustainable development. He said, "The world today admits that lifestyle has a major role in climate change. I propose a one-word movement before all of you. This word is LIFE, which means Lifestyle for Environment. Today, it is needed that all of us come together and take forward LIFE as a movement.”
While referring to the Indian Railways' target of achieving net zero emissions by 2030 and reducing 40 billion tonnes of emissions through the use of LEDs, He added, "For me, the Paris event was not a summit but a sentiment, a commitment and India was not making promises to the world, instead, 125 crore Indians were making promises to themselves. I am happy that a developing country like India is working to pull crores of people out of poverty," PM Modi added.
