Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for the Vadhvan Port project in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, a massive ₹76,000 crore initiative aimed at creating a world-class maritime gateway. The Vadhvan Port will be located near Dahanu and is set to become one of India’s largest deep-water ports, offering direct connectivity to international shipping routes. The project is designed to accommodate large container vessels and ultra-large cargo ships, with advanced infrastructure including deep berths and modern cargo handling facilities. It is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and stimulate local businesses. The development will also focus on sustainable practices and adhering to stringent environmental standards.
During the event, PM Modi highlighted the importance of the Vadhvan Port, stating, "Over the past decade, coastal development in India has accelerated like never before. We have modernised ports and developed waterways, with significant investments made in this area. Private investment has also risen. Our youth are benefitting from these advancements, gaining new opportunities. Today, the world is focused on Vadhvan Port, which will transform the economic landscape of the entire region."
Modi emphasised the significance of Maharashtra's development for the nation's progress, "Today marks a key milestone in India's development. A developed Maharashtra is essential for a developed India. Over the past decade and during my third term, we have consistently made significant decisions for Maharashtra. The state possesses the necessary power and resources for growth. With the foundation stone for Vadhvan Port now laid and an investment of ₹76,000 crore, it is set to become the largest container port in the country."
Additionally, Prime Minister Modi apologized for the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Sindhudurg, saying, "In 2013, when the BJP appointed me as the PM candidate, I began my journey by sitting as a devotee before the samadhi of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Raigad. For me and my colleagues, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name but a deity. I bow before his feet and offer my apologies."
The event also saw Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde praising the project, saying, “Today marks a golden day in the history of Palghar, Maharashtra, and the entire country. This project will not only benefit Palghar and Maharashtra but will also serve the entire nation.”
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured inclusive development, stating, “…I assure everyone, in the presence of the PM and CM, that no one will be left behind. We will ensure the development of all in the region, and future generations will also benefit from the Vadhvan Port to be built here. This port will benefit not only Maharashtra but the entire country…”
Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis called the Vadhvan Port project a historic turning point, remarking, “There is always an event that marks a turning point in a country’s history. I believe that with this Vadhvan Port, the PM’s name will be remembered for the next 200 years for his efforts in advancing the nation... I would also like to propose the construction of an airport in Palghar as Mumbai continues to expand.”
Prime Minister Modi also announced the launch of 218 fisheries projects worth around ₹1,560 crore, aimed at bolstering infrastructure and productivity in the sector across the country. These initiatives are expected to generate over five lakh employment opportunities in the fisheries sector. Additionally, he launched the National Roll Out of the Vessel Communication and Support System, a ₹360 crore project that will enhance communication, safety, and rescue operations for fishermen through the installation of transponders on fishing vessels across 13 coastal states and union territories.
These comprehensive initiatives underline the government's focus on enhancing India's maritime capabilities, boosting trade, and ensuring sustainable economic development.
