On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated three Param Rudra Supercomputing Systems, along with a High Performance Computing (HPC) system dedicated to advancing weather and climate research.
“At around 5.30 pm this evening, via video conferencing, I will be inaugurating three Param Rudra Super Computing Systems and a High-Performance Computing System for weather and climate. Will especially urge my young friends to join…,” PM Modi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
According to an official press release, the Param Rudra supercomputers will be dedicated to the nation as part of the government’s initiative to make India self-reliant in supercomputing technology. This effort aligns with the Centre’s broader goal of advancing technological infrastructure and promoting indigenous capabilities in high-performance computing.
The three Param Rudra supercomputers, developed at an estimated cost of Rs 130 crore under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), will be deployed at strategic locations in Delhi, Pune, and Kolkata. The Ministry of Science & Technology emphasised that the project aims to enhance India’s scientific research capabilities and further strengthen the nation’s technological infrastructure.
In Pune, the Giant Metre Radio Telescope (GMRT) will utilise the Param Rudra supercomputer to investigate Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) and other astronomical phenomena. In Delhi, the Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) will employ the system to advance research in material science and atomic physics. Meanwhile, in Kolkata, the S N Bose Centre will leverage the supercomputing technology to propel research in physics, cosmology, and earth sciences.
The initiative is part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), which seeks to strengthen India’s supercomputing infrastructure in response to growing demand from academia, researchers, MSMEs, and startups. As part of this mission, India’s first indigenously assembled supercomputer, PARAM Shivay, was installed at IIT (BHU) in 2019, marking a significant milestone in the country’s technological advancement.
The launch of the Param Rudra supercomputers was initially part of a larger program where Prime Minister Modi was set to dedicate projects worth Rs 22,600 crore across various sectors. However, the event was postponed due to the severe rainfall affecting Mumbai and Pune.
