On January 14, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ambitious “Mission Mausam” in New Delhi, marking the 150th foundation day of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The initiative aims to establish India as a “weather-ready” and “climate-smart” nation.
In addition, the Prime Minister unveiled the IMD Vision-2047 document, which outlined comprehensive strategies to enhance weather resilience and facilitate climate change adaptation. The document is set to include advanced plans for improving weather forecasting, management, and addressing climate change through mitigation measures.
A key component of “Mission Mausam” is the integration of cutting-edge weather surveillance technologies, including high-resolution atmospheric observation systems, next-generation radars, advanced satellites, and high-performance computing infrastructure. These advancements aim to strengthen India's capability to monitor and respond to weather and climate phenomena effectively.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the initiative will also prioritise deepening the understanding of weather and climate processes. This includes the provision of air quality data to support the development of long-term strategies for weather management and intervention.
The launch coincides with the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the nation’s premier weather-tracking organisation. To commemorate this milestone, a series of activities, events, and workshops have been organised to showcase the department’s significant contributions to enhancing India’s climate resilience. These events also highlighted the pivotal role of government institutions in delivering accurate and reliable weather and climate services.
