PM Modi lauds ‘momentous achievement’ as India wins 'historic' 100 Asian Games medals

India's achievement in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, was commended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the nation won an unprecedented 100 medals. He expressed his appreciation for the athletes' outstanding achievements.
"A momentous achievement for India at the Asian Games! The people of India are thrilled that we have reached a remarkable milestone of 100 medals. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our phenomenal athletes whose efforts have led to this historic milestone for India. Every awe-inspiring performance has made history and filled our hearts with pride," he said in a tweet.
The Prime Minister also said he was looking forward to hosting the Asian Games contingent and interacting with the athletes. “I look forward to hosting our Asian Games contingent on the 10th and interacting with our athletes.”
The Indian contingent won 25 gold, 35 silver, and 40 bronze medals, which is a major improvement over the 70 medals won overall at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang.
The nation's total medal tally passed the historic 100-medal threshold on Saturday morning with the Indian women's kabaddi team clinching a gold medal after defeating Chinese Taipei at the 19th Asian Games 2023.
India won medals in wrestling, archery (recurve), hockey, sepak takraw, and bridge. Medals were also confirmed by the men's cricket and both kabaddi teams however official stamp came on Saturday.
This is only the second time India has won over 100 medals in any of the three international games — The Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games.
At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India won 101 medals. However, the nation is poised to surpass that number easily as three more medals are certain to be won throughout the day.
