India once again reiterated its strong concern over the ongoing tensions in West Asia, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah on Wednesday. During the call, India clearly condemned the recent attacks on Kuwait’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting its firm stance on respecting national boundaries and maintaining peace in the region.
This conversation marked the second time the two leaders have spoken since the conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran began on February 28. The situation in West Asia has remained tense, with several developments raising concerns for regional stability. India has been actively engaging with leaders across the region to stay updated and to support diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions.
Prime Minister Modi has also been in touch with other key leaders in West Asia in recent days. On Tuesday, he spoke with Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates. These conversations reflect India’s continued diplomatic outreach in the region, especially at a time when geopolitical uncertainties are high.
“We exchanged views on the evolving situation in West Asia and shared concerns over recent developments. Reiterated India’s condemnation of attacks on Kuwait’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Modi said on social media.
During the discussion, Modi also stressed the importance of keeping crucial trade routes secure. He described ensuring “safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz” as India’s foremost priority. This route is vital for global oil supply and trade, making its safety important not just for India but for many countries worldwide. “We agreed that sustained diplomatic engagement remains essential for regional peace and stability,” he added.
The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to extend greetings for the upcoming festival of Eid al-Fitr. He thanked the Kuwaiti Crown Prince for his continued efforts in ensuring the safety and well-being of the Indian community living in Kuwait. This gesture reflects the strong ties between the two nations, especially in terms of people-to-people connections.
The Indian community in West Asia is significant in number and plays an important role in the region’s economy. There are nearly 10 million Indian nationals living across various West Asian countries. Among them, around one million reside in Kuwait alone, making Indians the largest expatriate group in the country. Their safety has become a key concern for the Indian government in light of the ongoing conflict.
India has repeatedly highlighted the need to protect its citizens abroad, especially as the situation continues to develop. In recent days, several Indians have been injured due to Iranian drone and missile strikes targeting infrastructure in the region. These incidents have increased concerns about the safety of foreign nationals, including Indians.
To address these concerns, India has been actively engaging with multiple leaders across West Asia. Apart from Kuwait and the UAE, Modi has spoken to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, and Qatar’s Amir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. These conversations show India’s effort to stay closely connected with all major stakeholders in the region.
Through these diplomatic efforts, India aims to promote peace, stability, and cooperation in West Asia. The government continues to monitor the situation closely while prioritizing the safety of its citizens and maintaining strong international relations.
