Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on opposition parties to unite in solidarity as the government held a briefing on 'Operation Sindoor' on Thursday, according to sources cited by India Today. During the meeting, opposition leaders were informed about the bravery of the Indian armed forces, who carried out a major cross-border operation targeting terror camps deep within Pakistan. The Prime Minister, speaking for the first time after the operation during an all-party meeting, delivered the message that "Every Indian citizen needs to stand united."
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the all-party meeting and saw participation from key leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, JP Nadda, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge represented Congress. Other attendees included Sandip Bandyopadhyay from the Trinamool Congress and TR Baalu from the DMK. Leaders from various opposition parties were also present, such as Ram Gopal Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Sanjay Singh (AAP), Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena UBT), Supriya Sule (NCP-SP), Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM), and Sasmit Patra (BJD).
After the meeting, Kharge told reporters, "We have extended our full support to the government."
Unlike their reaction to the 2019 Balakot airstrikes, the opposition this time openly praised the armed forces for their successful mission on Wednesday, in which nine terror camps linked to Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba were destroyed. The coordinated strikes by the Army and Air Force came in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam attack by Pakistan-based terrorists that claimed 26 lives. Meanwhile, the central government has instructed all states to step up monitoring of anti-national content on social media and act quickly, following a wave of misinformation being spread by Pakistan after 'Operation Sindoor'.
At its Wednesday meeting, the Congress Working Committee expressed solidarity and pledged full support to the government without any conditions. However, this contrasts with their stance after the 2019 Balakot airstrikes, when Congress and 20 other opposition parties issued a joint statement criticising the government for allegedly using the Pulwama attack and the armed forces' sacrifices for political gain. The Balakot airstrikes, aimed at terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, were carried out in retaliation for the Pulwama terror attack that killed more than 40 Indian soldiers. Jaish-e-Mohammed had claimed responsibility for the Pulwama attack.
Around the same time, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh came under fire from the BJP after he asked for proof of the Balakot operation. The BJP used such remarks to brand the Congress as "anti-national" during the general election campaign, which is believed to have negatively impacted the Congress's performance at the polls.
