In a video message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the opening of the Tuticorin International Container Terminal in Tamil Nadu, referring to it as the "new star of India's marine infrastructure" and predicting an increase in V.O. Chidambaranar Port's capacity. According to him, the project will bring India one step closer to becoming a developed country.
Highlighting the features of the new terminal, he said that it has a deep draft of 14 meters and a 300-meter-long berth. It would go a long way in bringing down the logistics cost and saving foreign exchange for India. The Prime Minister appreciated the focus of the port terminals on gender diversity, where as many as 40% of the employees are women, signifying growth in women-led development in the maritime sector.
The Prime Minister recognised Tamil Nadu's contribution to India's economic development during his speech, pointing out that the region's three major ports and seventeen minor ports serve as essential hubs for maritime trade. In order to support port-led development in the state, he also mentioned the government's investment of more than ₹7,000 crores in the construction of an outer harbour container terminal. "V.O.C. Port is ready to write a new chapter in India's maritime development," Modi declared, underscoring the country's efforts to tackle climate change. He also mentioned the port's designation as a hub for green hydrogen and a nodal point for offshore wind energy.
Declaring that India is now well-connected through a vast network of roads, highways, waterways, and airways, PM Modi emphasised the value of innovation and collaboration in the nation's development journey. He pointed out that India is now positioned as a major participant in the global supply chain due to its connectivity.
