Swabhiman Apartments, located in Ashok Vihar, Delhi, mark a transformative milestone in urban development and social welfare. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 3, inaugurated this ambitious initiative forms part of the Delhi Development Authority's (DDA) in-situ slum rehabilitation project. Designed to uplift residents of Jhuggi Jhopri (JJ) clusters, the project aims to replace slum settlements with modern housing, ensuring improved living conditions and access to essential amenities.
The development includes 1,675 newly constructed flats tailored for eligible beneficiaries, reflecting a commitment to affordable and inclusive housing. With a construction cost of Rs 25 lakh per flat, beneficiaries contribute only Rs 1.42 lakh as a nominal fee and Rs 30,000 for maintenance over five years—less than 7% of the total cost. This affordability underscores the project's focus on providing economically weaker sections of society with access to dignified living spaces and a healthier environment.
Swabhiman Apartments are thoughtfully designed to provide residents with a comfortable and dignified living environment. Equipped with essential amenities, the apartments include provisions for sanitation, reliable water supply, and community facilities that contribute to an improved quality of life. These features ensure that beneficiaries transition from substandard living conditions to well-equipped housing that meets modern urban standards.
The inauguration of Swabhiman Apartments signifies the successful completion of the second phase of the Delhi Development Authority's In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to the vision of ‘Housing for All,’ aiming to uplift marginalised communities in urban areas by providing them with decent housing.
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the project’s pivotal role in enhancing the ‘ease of living’ for Delhi’s residents, particularly those who previously endured inadequate housing conditions. This project is a testament to the government’s efforts to bridge the housing gap and improve urban living standards.
