Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth SEMICON India conference on Thursday at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi. The three-day national convention runs from September 17 to 19. It brings together industry experts, international partners, and policy figures to strengthen the national semiconductor and electronics ecosystem. The vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat powers this growth strategy. Government planners use targeted policies across the entire supply chain to establish India as a global manufacturing giant.

Official figures highlight a massive surge in domestic electronics manufacturing over eleven years. Electronics production reached around 12 lakh crore rupees in 2024-25, rising from 1.9 lakh crore rupees in 2014-15. This represents a six-fold increase in output. Total electronics exports also jumped significantly from 38,000 crore rupees to around 3.3 lakh crore rupees during the same period. This eight-fold growth showcases the rising international demand for Indian electronics.

Mobile phone manufacturing achieved the most dramatic progress during this expansion. Local production swelled from 18,000 crore rupees in 2014-15 to 5.45 lakh crore rupees in 2024-25. This marks a 28-fold surge in domestic output. Meanwhile, mobile phone exports shot up from 1,500 crore rupees to 2 lakh crore rupees. This shift represents a massive 127-fold surge in foreign sales. Consequently, foreign phone imports plummeted from 75 per cent of total domestic demand down to a tiny 0.02 per cent.

The government introduced the Semicon India Programme in January 2022 to sustain this momentum. This initiative builds a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem within national borders. It funds and guides semiconductor design, commercial fabrication, local assembly, product testing, advanced packaging, and module manufacturing. SEMICON India 2026 acts as a primary launchpad for these strategic policy goals.
