According to reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Gujarat's first Greenfield international airport situated near Rajkot City. The airport, developed in Hirasar village across an expansive area of more than 2,500 acres, came to fruition with a budget of over Rs 1,400 crore.
Boasting a 3,040-meter-long and 45-meter-wide runway, the airport can accommodate parking for 14 planes. Its impressive facilities include a 50,800 square meter apron area and a passenger terminal spanning approximately 23,000 square meters, which can efficiently handle a capacity of 1,280 travelers per hour.
Notably, the newly unveiled airport has been equipped with state-of-the-art technology and incorporates sustainable features. Its interior design draws inspiration from Rajkot's cultural vibrancy, depicting elements such as Dandiya dance and Lippan art. Situated in Hirasar village, approximately 30 km away from Rajkot, the airport holds great promise for enhancing connectivity and boosting regional development.
PM Modi's visit to Rajkot also marked the inauguration of various other projects worth over Rs 860 crore. Among the unveiled projects were an overbridge and a library, reflecting the government's commitment to advancing infrastructure and community amenities.
Greenfield airports represent a significant endeavor in the aviation sector. These airports are constructed from scratch, encompassing meticulous planning, designing, and implementation of all essential facilities, including runways, terminals, air traffic control towers, cargo handling areas, and parking facilities. Strategically planned to cater to current and future aviation requirements, Greenfield airports play a pivotal role in expanding air travel accessibility across the country.
The Greenfield Airport policy has already yielded impressive results, with 11 airports operational and approval granted for the development of 21 additional airports in the country. As per reports, the development work for the remaining 10 airports is currently in progress and is expected to be completed within the designated timeline. The government's focus on expanding aviation infrastructure bodes well for India's connectivity and economic growth prospects.
