Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway, one of India’s longest high-speed road corridors. The project connects Meerut to Prayagraj and is expected to improve connectivity across Uttar Pradesh. The expressway is being seen as a major step toward strengthening infrastructure in the state.
The Ganga Expressway has been developed as a six-lane corridor with the option to expand it to eight lanes in the future. It is designed for vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 120 kmph. This is expected to reduce travel time and make movement smoother and safer for both people and goods. Officials believe the project will support faster transportation and improve overall efficiency.
According to officials, the expressway will pass through 12 important districts. These include Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj. By connecting these regions, the road will help strengthen economic links between the western and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh. It is expected to improve access and create new opportunities in these areas.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shared his views on the project in a post on X. He said the state’s development journey would gain fresh momentum with the inauguration of the expressway from Hardoi. He described the project as a “lifeline” connecting villages, farmers, entrepreneurs and youth, adding that it would help accelerate development and bridge regional gaps.
Union minister and BJP’s Uttar Pradesh president Pankaj Chaudhary also welcomed the development. He called the expressway a landmark infrastructure project and said it is a major step toward modernising the state’s road network.
Officials said the Prime Minister reached Hardoi around 11 am for the event. After inaugurating the expressway, he visited an exhibition organised by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority. He also planted saplings and addressed a public gathering before leaving later in the day. The visit highlighted the importance of the project for the state.
One of the key features of the expressway is a 3.2-km-long airstrip near Shahjahanpur. This airstrip has been designed to allow emergency landings of aircraft from the Indian Air Force. The expressway also includes several modern safety systems. These include an Intelligent Traffic Management System, CCTV surveillance, emergency call boxes, ambulances and regular patrolling units. These features are aimed at ensuring safety and smooth traffic movement.
The project has been built under a public-private partnership model. Along the route, plans have been made to develop integrated manufacturing and logistics clusters. These will include warehouses, cold storage units and food processing facilities. The aim is to support agricultural marketing, attract investment and create job opportunities in the region.
The Ganga Expressway will also connect with other major expressways in the state. These include the Purvanchal Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway and Gorakhpur Link Expressway. This will create a wider and more connected road network across Uttar Pradesh. It will make travel easier between different regions.
Authorities believe the expressway will play an important role in driving industrial growth in the state. It is also expected to improve logistics efficiency and support faster movement of goods. The project aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s goal of becoming a trillion-dollar economy. By improving connectivity and infrastructure, the expressway is likely to support long-term economic development.
