PM Modi honoured with highest civilian award on his historic Ghana visit, signs key MoUs to strengthen ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Accra in Ghana on Wednesday in what was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over thirty years and as he arrived he was welcomed with chants of 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna'. The Indian diaspora warmly received Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.
President John Mahama personally welcomed the Indian Prime Minister and presented him with a ceremonial guard of honour, after which the two leaders held delegation-level discussions at Jubilee House in Accra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the highest civilian honour of the country, by President John Mahama on Wednesday. This visit by PM Modi was marked by symbolic acts, important statements, and gestures of friendship that highlighted the strong bond between India and Ghana.
After his meeting with President Mahama, PM Modi said, "We were on the same page that terrorism is the enemy of humanity. We appreciate Ghana's cooperation in our anti-terrorism efforts. We agreed to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism. Our perspectives towards UN reforms are also the same."
He added, "We feel that this is not the time for war. Issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy." He further said, "In defence and security, we shall advance on the slogan of 'Security through Solidarity'."
He noted, "India is not merely a partner but a co-traveller on Ghana's journey to nation-building. Our two-way trade has breached USD 3 billion. Indian enterprises have invested $ 2 billion in approximately 900 projects. We have aimed to double our trade in the next 5 years. In the FinTech space, Bharat UPI will be going to share the digital payments experience with Ghana."
He concluded by saying, "It is a matter of pride for India that under our G20 presidency, the African Union received permanent membership of the G20."
Following the talks between Prime Minister Modi and President John Dramani Mahama, India and Ghana signed four agreements on Wednesday.
The first agreement was an MoU on a Cultural Exchange Programme to encourage greater understanding and collaboration in areas such as art, music, dance, literature, and heritage.
The second MoU was signed between the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to strengthen cooperation in standardisation, certification, and quality assurance.
The third agreement was signed between the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine in Ghana and the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda in India, to work together in education, training and research in the field of traditional medicine.
The fourth agreement was an MoU to hold Joint Commission Meetings to institutionalise high-level talks and regularly review the progress of bilateral cooperation.
