PM Modi holds ministerial meeting amidst unrest in Manipur

According to reports, on June 26th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a meeting in New Delhi, which was attended by senior ministers and officials. During the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed about the current situation in Manipur and the measures being undertaken to establish peace and normalcy in the troubled northeastern state.
As per the information received, the situation in Manipur remains volatile and efforts are ongoing to bring it under control. It has been stated that the region has witnessed nearly two months of unrest, resulting in the unfortunate loss of 115 lives.
As per reports, a meeting was convened, which saw the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, along with senior officials. Notably, this meeting took place a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's return from his official visits to the United States and Egypt.

During the meeting, leaders from 18 parties presented suggestions to ease tensions in Manipur, such as sending an all-party delegation to the state. Some parties also raised demands for the removal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
As per an anonymous party functionary familiar with the matter, the Union Minister of Petroleum, Hardeep Singh Puri, received instructions to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted supply of cooking gas and fuel. The aim is to prevent any shortages of essential commodities. The distribution and monitoring of supplies are now being overseen by the Territorial Army, with a focus on preventing malpractices and hoarding. The matter of essential supplies was raised during the all-party meeting and in discussions between Shah and Chief Minister Biren Singh.
Ethnic clashes in Manipur, starting on May 3rd, have resulted in 115 deaths and 300 injuries. The violence erupted over proposed changes to the state's reservation system, triggering protests by tribal Kuki groups. Thousands have been displaced, and authorities have implemented curfews, suspended internet services, and deployed additional security forces. Tensions continue despite ongoing patrols and search operations. Internet services in the state remain partially disrupted.
