Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address at the first International Solar Festival, emphasised India's significant strides in solar energy. Speaking via video conferencing at the two-day event held in New Delhi, the Prime Minister announced that India’s solar energy capacity has increased 32-fold in the past decade. This rapid growth, he noted, positions India to achieve 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. Modi also highlighted that India is the first G20 nation to fulfil the renewable energy commitments outlined in the Paris Agreement.
Mr. Modi praised the growth of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), established in 2015, which has expanded its membership to 100 countries, with 19 more in the process of joining. He described the ISA as a key player in the vision of “One World, One Sun,” noting its crucial role in global solar energy policy and action.
The Prime Minister also touched on the cultural significance of the sun, citing the ancient Vedas and pointing out that millions of Indians still chant hymns dedicated to the sun. He remarked that many cultures globally have shown similar reverence for the sun, making the International Solar Festival a platform to celebrate the sun's impact on the world and help build a sustainable future.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, echoed the Prime Minister's sentiments, calling for a united effort toward a solar-powered future. He noted that India has a long history of harnessing solar energy, which has evolved with advancements in technology.
The International Solar Alliance works with governments worldwide to promote solar power as a pathway to a carbon-neutral future. The International Solar Festival celebrates the transformative power of solar energy, aiming to showcase how it is advancing global goals like universal energy access and sustainable development.
The two-day event at Bharat Mandapam features technical sessions led by industry experts, exhibition booths by ISA member countries, and experience zones highlighting solar technologies. The festival also includes cultural performances and concerts, making the event a vibrant celebration of solar energy’s potential.
