Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a state-of-the-art diesel locomotive on Friday. The Marhowra Plant manufactured this locomotive for export to the Republic of Guinea under the 'Make in India' initiative.
This was the first export locomotive produced in this factory. The manufacturers equipped it with high-horsepower engines, advanced AC propulsion systems, microprocessor-based control systems, and ergonomic cab designs. They also included technologies like regenerative braking.
Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects in Bihar's Siwan. These projects focused on the water, rail, and power sectors in the state.
He said, "I returned from abroad only yesterday. During this visit, I spoke to the leaders of the world's prosperous countries. All the leaders are very impressed with India's rapid progress. They see India becoming the world's third-largest economic superpower. Bihar is going to play a crucial role in this..."
Madhepura in Bihar’s Chapra district, once an integral node in India’s freedom movement, led a new phase of industrial resurgence. The Marhowra factory not only advanced domestic railway modernisation but also contributed to India’s goal of becoming a reliable partner in global cooperation. The recent deal with Guinea, titled “Project KOMO,” involved the export of 140 diesel engines valued at around Rs 3,000 crore.
This marked a historic milestone. For the first time, a manufacturing unit based in Bihar exported heavy locomotive engines to the global market. This placed India on the map as a global railway manufacturing hub.
The Wabtec Diesel Locomotive Factory, a joint venture between Wabtec (76%) and Indian Railways (24%), has produced 729 high-horsepower diesel engines since its inception in 2018. This included 545 units of 4500 HP and 184 units of 6000 HP. Now, with increasing global demand, this facility has become a strong example of India’s export-led manufacturing future.
This achievement reflected the vision of "Make in India" and "Aatmanirbhar Bharat." It translated policy into a measurable global impact. With the slogan "Make in Bihar – Make for the World," Madhepura transformed from a small town into a symbol of India’s manufacturing capability.
