PM Modi Says He Is Deeply Concerned Over Reports of Attack on Putin’s Residence, Urges Restraint and Dialogue
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep concern after reports emerged that the official residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin was targeted in an attack. In his reaction, the Prime Minister appealed for restraint from all sides and strongly urged that diplomacy and ongoing dialogue remain the way to end hostilities and reach peace.
Mr. Modi’s remarks came amid conflicting claims about what happened in Russia. According to reports, Russia says that Ukrainian forces carried out a drone attack on President Putin’s state residence located between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The Kremlin’s claim stated that dozens of long‑range drones were involved in the incident, although details about any damage were unclear.
In response to these reports, Prime Minister Modi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his concern and to emphasize the importance of peace through dialogue.
He wrote: “Deeply concerned by reports of the targeting of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation. Ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path toward ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge all concerned to remain focused on these efforts and to avoid any actions that could undermine them.”
In this statement, Mr. Modi clearly stressed that diplomacy must remain the focus as leaders and nations try to end the ongoing war and conflict. He asked all parties involved not to take steps that might harm peace efforts, and instead to stay committed to diplomatic engagement.
The Prime Minister’s comments underlined India’s consistent position that dialogue and negotiation are the only credible ways to address problems in international relations, especially during times of rising tensions between countries.
The Russian government officially claimed that Ukraine was responsible for attempting to strike the Russian President’s residence. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the incident took place in the Novgorod region, north of Moscow and close to Saint Petersburg. Lavrov said that approximately 91 long‑range drones were used in the alleged attack, although Russian defensive systems intercepted all of them.
Lavrov described the reported drone strike as a serious act and warned that Russia’s approach to peace negotiations could be affected by such actions. He referred to the incident as a kind of “terrorist attack,” and said that Moscow might revise its negotiating stance in response.
Despite the claims of a major attack, Russian officials also noted that no casualties or damage were reported from the incident. According to their account, all drones were intercepted and brought down by Russia’s air defences.
The Kremlin also said that President Putin personally shared information about the alleged incident with other world leaders during a recent phone call. The Russian government claimed that the matter was discussed directly with other heads of state.
Ukraine strongly rejected the Russian claims about a strike on President Putin’s residence. Ukrainian leaders said there was no plausible evidence to support the accusation and argued that the allegation was intended to shift attention away from important diplomatic efforts.
According to statements from Kyiv, Ukraine denied that it had carried out any such attack and dismissed the Russian narrative as false. Officials in Ukraine said the claims were meant to undermine ongoing peace talks and diplomatic progress.
The report of an attack whether true or not has heightened geopolitical concern around the ongoing Russia‑Ukraine conflict. Many countries and international observers say that such incidents can make peaceful negotiation more difficult and can escalate tensions more broadly.
In his statement, Prime Minister Modi made it clear that India supports peaceful means to resolve disputes. He reminded that diplomacy and continued dialogue are the best ways to bring lasting peace, not force or actions that can worsen the situation.
Modi’s call for restraint was directed at all parties involved in the conflict, urging them to avoid actions that might undermine global peace efforts. He stressed that any steps that increase tensions could derail the work to end hostilities and achieve a lasting solution.
India has consistently followed a policy of supporting diplomacy over conflict in international disputes. Throughout the Russia‑Ukraine war, India has repeatedly asked all sides to focus on peace talks and to avoid any actions that could worsen the crisis.
Prime Minister Modi’s statement on Tuesday reflects this long‑standing approach. By urging restraint and continued diplomatic engagement, he reinforced India’s belief that peaceful negotiation is the only viable path forward in global conflicts.
