PM Modi congratulates newly elected Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Peter Magyar after his Tisza Party secured a decisive victory in Hungary’s parliamentary elections. The result marks a significant political shift in the country, ending 16 years of rule by the Fidesz party.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Heartiest congratulations to Peter Magyar and the Tisza Party on your resounding election victory. India and Hungary are bound by deep-rooted friendship, shared values, and enduring mutual respect.” He also highlighted the importance of future cooperation between the two nations.
“I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our bilateral cooperation and to advance the vital India-EU Strategic Partnership for the shared prosperity and well-being of our peoples,” he added.
Magyar’s victory is being seen as a turning point in Hungarian politics. It is expected to influence not only domestic policies but also Hungary’s relationship with the European Union. The election outcome reflects a clear shift in voter sentiment after more than a decade of leadership under Viktor Orban.
Following the results, Orban conceded defeat and extended his congratulations to Magyar. Acknowledging the outcome, Magyar shared on X, “Prime Minister Viktor Orban has just called to congratulate us on our victory.”
According to a report by Al Jazeera, with 97.35 per cent of the votes counted, the Tisza Party secured 138 seats in the 199-member parliament. This gave the party a strong majority with 53.6 per cent of the vote. In comparison, Orban’s Fidesz party won 55 seats, receiving 37.8 per cent support, based on official results cited in the report.
The outcome has drawn reactions from leaders across Europe. Pedro Sanchez described the result as a win for European values. In his message, he said, “Today Europe wins and European values win. Congratulations to all Hungarian citizens on the historic elections. I look forward to working together with Peter Magyar for a better future for all Europeans.”
Similarly, Friedrich Merz congratulated Magyar and expressed optimism about future cooperation. He said, “The Hungarian people have decided. My heartfelt congratulations on your electoral success, dear Peter Magyar. I look forward to working with you. Let’s join forces for a strong, secure, and above all, united Europe.”
The election result is being widely interpreted as a message from Hungarian voters seeking change. It signals a new political direction for the country after years of continuity under Fidesz. Analysts believe the shift could reshape Hungary’s internal governance as well as its engagement with European partners.
Magyar’s strong mandate gives his party a clear advantage in forming the government and implementing its policies. At the same time, the international response shows that global leaders are keen to work with the new leadership and strengthen ties moving forward.
As Hungary enters a new political phase, the focus will now shift to how the incoming government addresses key domestic challenges and redefines its position within the European Union. The coming months are likely to be crucial in determining the direction of this transition.
