PM Modi champions Global South development and women empowerment at G20 Varanasi Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a video conference for the G20 Development Ministers' Meeting on June 12. During his address, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for increased investment in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the importance of reforming multilateral financial institutions. He highlighted the significance of high-quality data, promoting a pro-planet lifestyle, and advancing gender equality and women's empowerment.
In his speech, Prime Minister Modi advocated for the democratization of technology to bridge the data divide. He conveyed India's willingness to share its experiences with partner countries, noting the transformative impact of digitalization within the nation. The Prime Minister's remarks aimed to underscore the revolutionary changes brought about by technology and India's commitment to contributing to global development efforts.
“Democratization of technology is an important tool to help bridge the data divide. In India, digitalisation has brought revolutionary change. India is willing to share its experience with partner countries," he said.
During the G20 Development Ministers' Meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need for reforms in multilateral financial institutions and advocated for increased investment in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also highlighted the importance of finding solutions to address data risks faced by many countries.
PM Modi expressed the view that multilateral financial institutions should be reformed to expand eligibility criteria, ensuring that finance is accessible to those in need. He emphasized India's efforts to improve the quality of life in over a hundred aspirational districts, which are pockets of underdevelopment.
Gender equality and women's empowerment were identified as crucial factors in achieving the SDGs. The Prime Minister urged the adoption of a game-changing Action Plan for Women-led Development, emphasizing that in India, the focus is not limited to women's empowerment but rather a comprehensive approach to women-led development. He highlighted the role of women in setting the development agenda and being agents of growth and change.
PM Modi's remarks underscored India's commitment to addressing global development challenges and promoting inclusive growth through reforms, investments, and empowering women to lead the way.
During his address, PM Modi also said, “In India, we hold great respect for rivers, trees, mountains, and all elements of nature. Traditional Indian thought promotes a pro-planet lifestyle. Last year, along with the UN Secretary-General, launched Mission LIFE – Lifestyle. I am glad that this group is working to develop a set of High-Level Principles on LIFE. This would be a significant contribution to climate actions."
