Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted the urgent need for peace in West Asia during a phone call with his Dutch counterpart Rob Jetten. The conversation marked their first interaction since Jetten assumed office last month. Along with discussing the ongoing tensions involving Iran, the two leaders also focused on expanding cooperation between India and the Netherlands across multiple sectors.
During the call, both leaders exchanged views on the evolving situation in West Asia, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Prime Minister Modi stressed the importance of restoring stability in the region at the earliest. “Exchanged views on the situation in West Asia and emphasised the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region,” PM Modi said on social media. His remarks reflect India’s consistent position of encouraging dialogue and diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts in the region.
India has been actively advocating for peaceful negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing US-Israel war involving Iran. It has also underlined the importance of keeping key global trade routes open. In this context, India has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the smooth flow of energy supplies and essential goods across the world. The route remains crucial for global oil shipments, and any disruption can have wide-ranging economic consequences.
Apart from regional security concerns, the discussion also covered the growing partnership between India and the Netherlands. Over the past few years, both countries have strengthened cooperation in sectors such as water management, healthcare, clean energy, defence, and security. These areas have become central to their bilateral engagement and reflect shared priorities in sustainable development and innovation.
Prime Minister Modi also pointed out new areas where the partnership can grow further. He said, “Highlighted the potential of our partnership in areas such as semiconductors, mega water projects, green hydrogen and talent mobility,” indicating a forward-looking approach to collaboration. These sectors are seen as key drivers of economic growth and technological advancement for both nations.
Prime Minister Jetten also expressed optimism about the future of India-Netherlands relations. He noted that ties between the two countries are becoming stronger with time and are gradually evolving into a strategic partnership. This partnership includes cooperation in defence, water management, innovation, and trade, which are critical areas for long-term engagement.
Jetten also referred to the broader relationship between India and the European Union. “Our ties with India are growing stronger and stronger. Earlier this year, the EU and India concluded a major trade agreement, and the Netherlands and India are developing a strategic partnership that includes defence, water management, innovation and trade,” he said. His statement highlights the growing economic and strategic alignment between India and European nations.
The Dutch Prime Minister further added that he looks forward to hosting Prime Minister Modi in the Netherlands in the near future. “He also noted that he looked forward to welcoming Modi to the Netherlands “soon so we can make further progress on these issues,” signalling intent to deepen engagement through direct discussions and cooperation initiatives.
Overall, the conversation reflects both countries’ commitment to addressing global challenges while strengthening bilateral ties. While peace in West Asia remains a key concern, the growing India-Netherlands partnership shows strong potential for collaboration in emerging and critical sectors.
