The Prime Minister, through a video conference, participated in the 'Viksit Bharat Viksit Gujarat' program where he inaugurated and initiated the construction of more than 1.3 lakh houses worth Rs 2,993 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and various other housing schemes. The beneficiaries are from all 182 assembly constituencies in the state.
Addressing the event, PM Modi said, “In Ayodhya, Prabhu Ram got a house, and in villages, you all got houses. Today the families who have got their new houses, to all such families, many congratulations and good wishes from my side…”
Emphasizing the target of making India a developed country by 2047, the centenary year of Independence, PM Modi said, “In 10 years, 25 crore people in the country have moved out of poverty. The government stayed with them every step of the way and they used the benefits of government schemes, utilised the money in the right way, and… beat poverty. It has affirmed my belief that these schemes can bring people out of poverty… Today’s time is a… time similar to what we saw during our Independence struggle… Every child of this country wants that in the coming 25 years, India should become a viksit rashtra (developed nation) and for this, everyone is making their contributions.”
“Today houses for the poor are getting made. Earlier, money given for homes for the poor was very little, and even then, middlemen would take cuts and loot them. Now they (beneficiaries) get it directly in their bank accounts…” he added.
During the programme, he also interacted with the beneficiaries of the housing schemes and said that it marked the fulfilment of the “Modi ki guarantee”.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the current pace of constructing houses for the underprivileged surpasses that of the period before 2014. He noted that in the pre-2014 era, funding for housing projects for the poor was limited, and there were issues such as leakages through commissions. However, he emphasized that the current approach involves direct transfers of over ₹2.25 lakhs into the bank accounts of beneficiaries, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring more efficient use of funds.
He also said that now there’s freedom of building homes according to the needs of the families while also building toilets, tap water connections, supplying electricity and gas connections. “These facilities have helped the poor in saving money”, he said. PM Modi also emphasized that the houses are now registered in the name of women making them house owners.
The Prime Minister acknowledged Gujarat's significant progress in the PM Awas Yojana, stating that over 9 lakh houses have been built in urban areas, and more than 5 lakh houses have been constructed in rural areas under PM Awas – Gramin. He emphasized the adoption of new technology to ensure both quality and swift construction processes. Additionally, he highlighted the completion of 1,100 houses under the Lighthouse project as a notable achievement.
