A plane crashed into the sea soon after taking off from Roatan Island, located off the coast of Honduras, on Monday, resulting in at least seven people dead. Rescue teams managed to recover ten people from the crash site. Six of them were rushed to the hospital but did not survive, according to Major Wilmer Guerrero from the fire department, as reported by AFP. Later, authorities discovered a crew member’s body floating in the water near the wreckage, which had gone down about a kilometre from the shore. Footage of the crash has been circulating on social media.
Lisandro Muñoz, the island's police chief, stated in an interview with Noticiero Hoy Mismo that the aircraft plunged into the sea soon after takeoff. He also noted that ongoing recovery operations were challenging due to the plane’s location in the water. The Jetstream aircraft was operated by Honduran airline Lanhsa and carried 17 passengers, including three crew members. However, the country's transport minister did not specify the exact number of casualties while speaking to a local radio station.
The aircraft carried a U.S. national, a French national, and two minors as it travelled toward La Ceiba airport on the Honduran mainland.
Meanwhile, in a separate aviation incident in the United States, a Delta Airlines regional jet had a mishap while attempting to land at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night. The plane's left wing struck the runway around 10:10 p.m. EDT during a go-around manoeuvre prompted by an unstable approach, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The FAA assured that it would investigate the incident. Delta Airlines stated that the flight, carrying 76 passengers and four crew members, had taken off from Jacksonville, Florida, en route to New York.
The airline told the crew "followed established procedures to safely enact a go-around at New York-LaGuardia. The aircraft landed safely and proceeded to its arrival gate."
