During a visit to Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, members of the panel were informed about the 'harrowing experiences' by the locals, stated Arun Halder, Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC).
Protests have erupted in Sandeshkhali due to allegations of atrocities committed by leaders of the ruling TMC on the local population.
Under the leadership of Arun Halder, the team engaged in discussions with residents of the area, which primarily consists of individuals from Scheduled Caste and other backward communities.
"After the visit, we conversed with numerous individuals who recounted the harrowing experiences they endured," stated Halder, expressing the outcomes of their discussions. Furthermore, he leveled an accusation against the district administration, alleging non-cooperation during their visit.
Halder informed reporters that upon informing the district administration about their intended visit, they were advised against it due to the fragile law and order situation in the area. Despite this caution, the team remained steadfast in their decision to proceed with the visit.
Furthermore, Halder alleged that the state government failed to provide logistical support to the NCSC team for their visit. Consequently, local transportation arrangements were made to facilitate their tour of the area.
In Sandeshkhali, protests have persisted for several days, with a notable participation of women who have taken to the streets. Their demands include the arrest of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his associates.
Accusations leveled against Sheikh and his associates involve allegations of forcefully seizing land and engaging in sexual harassment against women in the area.
Sheikh has been in hiding since January 5, following a violent altercation wherein a mob attacked officers from the ED during a raid at his residence. The raid was conducted about an alleged ration scam. Additionally, his accomplice, Sibhu Hazra, is also currently evading law enforcement authorities.
