The Indian Parliament has passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, officially recognising Amaravati as the only and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh. This decision brings an end to years of uncertainty and debate over the state’s capital, which began after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The new law gives clear legal backing to Amaravati as the centre of administration, governance, and development in the state.
The bill overrides earlier discussions and proposals that suggested having multiple capitals, including Visakhapatnam and Kurnool. By declaring Amaravati as the sole capital, the government has aimed to ensure administrative stability and a focused approach to development. The move is seen as a significant step in strengthening governance and removing confusion regarding the state’s administrative structure.
The issue of Andhra Pradesh’s capital has remained unresolved since the state was divided and Hyderabad was made a temporary joint capital for a limited period. Over the years, different governments have proposed different models, including the idea of three capitals to decentralise power. However, this new legislation settles the matter by firmly establishing Amaravati as the permanent capital, thereby ending the long-standing political and administrative debate.
The passage of the bill is also expected to have a positive impact on the state’s development plans. With clarity on the capital, it is likely to boost investor confidence and encourage infrastructure growth in Amaravati. The decision provides a clear direction for future planning and governance, which had been affected earlier due to uncertainty over the capital issue.
At the same time, the bill did witness political opposition. The YSR Congress Party opposed the move and staged a walkout during the parliamentary proceedings. Despite this, the legislation was passed, reflecting the Centre’s firm stance on having a single capital for the state.
Overall, the recognition of Amaravati as the sole capital marks a historic moment for Andhra Pradesh. It not only resolves a decade-long issue but also sets the stage for stable governance and long-term development in the state.
