At the spectacular Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony on Friday, the Indian contingent was led by two-time Olympian PV Sindhu and legendary table tennis player A Sharath Kamal.
On the call sheet, the Indian contingent was ranked 84th. Within the contingent, the males wore traditional 'kurta-pyjama' in the colours of the national flag, while the women wore sarees. Making her third participation at the Games, Sindhu expressed her pride at being in the Olympic village ‘’I will be the flag bearer for the Indian contingent and I am super proud’ Sindhu told JioCinema head of the ceremony, "I will be holding the bigger flag at the opening ceremony and I hope, with the same excitement, I do well in the competition and get a medal back to India."
The fifth-time Olympian Kamal stated, “It's been a moment that I've been dreaming and visualising about, for the last 3-4 months. I'm pretty excited that I'm going to live that moment and especially that I'm going to do that hat with PV Sindhu. So, it's a fantastic moment, I would say.”
78 Indian athletes and officials took part in the event in all.
The boats travelled by the city's most famous sights, including the rebuilt Notre Dame Cathedral, which was completely destroyed in a fire five years ago, the famous Louvre Museum, and a few Olympic venues. The opening ceremony was traditionally held along the Seine River, which runs through the centre of the historic French city. This was the first time in the history of the Olympics that the event was not held inside a stadium.
