Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, the Charge d'affaires of the Palestine Embassy in New Delhi, visited MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at her home to congratulate her on her recent win in Kerala's Wayanad. During the visit, she reportedly criticised the ongoing Israeli war in Gaza and the international community's silence on the issue.
Regarding the meeting on Tuesday, Abu Jazer stated, "I met Priyanka Gandhi at her residence to congratulate her on her victory as a member of the Indian Parliament in the 18th Lok Sabha (Wayanad) constituency." Priyanka also reaffirmed her support for the Palestinian people's fight for freedom and independence. In October of last year, Priyanka criticised Israel and accused it of breaking all international laws amid the growing death toll in Gaza. She had frequently criticised the Benjamin Netanyahu administration prior to her election debut earlier this year.
Priyanka had been a vocal opponent of Israel's deadly and destructive offensive in Gaza in July, calling the conflict, which has killed hundreds of civilians so far, "barbaric" and urging other nations to denounce the Israeli government's "genocidal actions" and put an end to them. Priyanka was recently elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wayanad, a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. This seat was previously held by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition. Wayanad has a significant Muslim population.
Priyanka stated at the meeting that "she had lived the Palestinian cause since childhood and believed in its justice," according to a statement from the Palestinian Embassy. She also said that as a child, she had seen Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat several times when he travelled to India to meet with previous Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi.
According to the Embassy, Priyanka also highlighted the cordial, long-standing ties between the Indian and Palestinian people and denounced the international community's silence and the Israeli war's ongoing aggression on Gaza. “She regretted and grieved the scenes of destruction and devastation in Gaza including the targeted attacks on civilians and the fall of children and women. She offered her condolences to every mother who has lost her child,” it said.
During the meeting, Abu Jazer highlighted India's important role in the West Asia region, particularly in working towards a ceasefire in Gaza. He also emphasised India's support for the Palestinian people's rights to freedom and stability. He reminded everyone of the long-standing, friendly relationship between Palestine and the Indian Congress Party, as well as with other Indian political parties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India's support for Palestine and conveyed his profound worry for the security and humanitarian circumstances resulting from the conflict in a special message two weeks ago. In addition to calling for a halt to terrorist activities, he also called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages. "India calls for an immediate ceasefire, an end to all acts of terrorism, the release of hostages and the sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine," Modi stated in a letter he wrote on November 26 in honour of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
