On Tuesday, Pakistan’s parliament unanimously passed a resolution calling on India to implement UN Security Council resolutions, allowing Kashmiris to decide their future through a fair and impartial plebiscite conducted under UN supervision.
Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam presented the resolution, which, according to Radio Pakistan, reaffirmed Pakistan’s “unwavering moral, political and diplomatic support” for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.
However, this is not the first time such a resolution has been passed in support of the Kashmiris. The reason behind Tuesday’s resolution remains unclear.
“The resolution paid glowing tributes to the valiant Kashmiris and their sacrifices; called on India to improve the human rights situation in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK); release detained Kashmiri leaders, and revoke all oppressive laws,” it displayed.
India-Pakistan relations, already strained, deteriorated further after India revoked Article 370 of the Constitution on August 5, 2019, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its unique status and dividing it into two Union Territories.
India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir “was, is and shall forever” be an integral part of the country. Pakistan’s resolution strongly condemned the alleged human rights violations in Kashmir and the “illegal” actions taken on August 5, 2019. It further stressed that “no political process in the occupied territory could substitute the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.”
It also strongly denounced provocative remarks made by India's civilian and military leadership concerning Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. The resolution emphasised that settling the Jammu and Kashmir dispute by UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people “is vital for ensuring peace and stability in South Asia.”
Minister for Kashmir Affairs Amir Muqam, stated that the UN must take action in resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. He also reaffirmed Pakistan's strong support for the Kashmiri people.
