After last week's deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, there has been increased pressure on Pakistan from India. In response, Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, held meetings with ambassadors from Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the UAE, to seek their support.
During these meetings, Sharif explained Pakistan's position on the April 22 attack, in which 26 people lost their lives. While India has blamed Pakistan for the attack, Pakistan firmly rejects this accusation. After a Pakistani minister mentioned 'credible intelligence' suggesting that India might take military action over Pakistan's alleged involvement in the Pahalgam tourist attack, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received calls from US officials and other diplomats, according to Sharif’s office and Pakistan's foreign ministry. Sharif’s office stated that during his talks with countries like Saudi Arabia, he called for India to de-escalate tensions. He emphasised Pakistan's commitment to peace and stability in South Asia.
Sharif also spoke with the UAE's ambassador, Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al-Zaabi, saying Pakistan had no role in the tourist attack. He offered to take part in an international investigation that would be credible, transparent, and neutral, according to his office. In his meeting with Saudi ambassador Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Maliky, Sharif updated him on the situation. The Saudi envoy responded by expressing the Kingdom's desire to work with Pakistan for peace and security in the region.
The Indian Army said on Friday that it had responded to gunfire from Pakistan for the eighth night in a row. The firing happened in several areas of Kashmir, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Naushera, and Akhnoor. According to the Army, the firing was unprovoked. So far, there has been no response from Pakistan. No one was injured in the latest exchange.
