Since July 2019, more than 86,000 elderly citizens have gone on pilgrimage under Delhi's Mukhyamantri Teerth Yatra Yojana (MMTY). Among all the destinations, Rameshwaram has been the most visited. The pilgrims have travelled to various religious sites, including Dwarkadhish, Jagannath Puri, Tirupati, Shirdi, Ayodhya, Ujjain, Katra (Jammu), Amritsar, and Ajmer. This information was shared by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in a written reply to a question by MLA Mukesh Kumar Ahlawat.
Chief Minister CM Gupta also oversees the revenue department. Between 2019 and 2024, a total of 92 trains were operated under the scheme. Out of these, 29 trains traveled to Rameshwaram, 25 to Dwarkadhish, eight to Jagannath Puri, six to Tirupati, four to Amritsar, and one to Ajmer, while the rest went to other destinations. The chief minister shared details about the scheme, including the places covered, available facilities, and ongoing assessments.
The scheme, which has been in operation since January 9, 2018, provides free pilgrimage travel to eligible beneficiaries. Between July 12, 2019, and February 29, 2024, several trips saw participation of over 1,000 people, as stated by the Chief Minister in her written reply. For example, a pilgrimage to Amritsar on July 12, 2019, included 1,019 participants, including volunteers. Similarly, large numbers of people took part in trips to Katra, Rameshwaram, and Tirupati.
The response also explained the services provided to the pilgrims, mentioning that transportation by bus was arranged for all devotees to travel to and from the station to the religious site. Furthermore, accommodation, food, and medical care were provided for each pilgrim.
