Over 200 individuals have been charged in relation to a stone-throwing incident that took place during a protest organised by a Hindu group. The protest was held to demand the demolition of a mosque that was allegedly constructed on government land.
Eight individuals have been mentioned in the FIRs filed under various Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions, according to Uttarkashi Kotwali SHO Amarjeet Singh. Amit Shrivastava, the superintendent of police for Uttarkashi, stated that the district is under prohibition orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
During a protest by the Sanyukt Hindu Sangathan on Thursday, which demanded the demolition of a mosque in the Barahat neighbourhood as it was constructed on government land, 27 persons, including seven police officers, were hurt. An altercation broke out between the demonstrators and the police when they attempted to dismantle the barricading after they had begun reciting Hanuman Chalisa while sitting on a dharna on the Gangotri National Highway.
During this, some individuals began throwing stones, according to officials. The police then used tear gas shells at the demonstrators and then lathi-charged, injuring both protestors and police officers. According to SP Shrivastava, in addition to the deployment of more police officers in high-risk locations, flag marches were also held throughout the town. During their visit to the district, the SP and District Magistrate Meharban Singh Bisht urged the relevant officials to keep the peace. The group issued a demand for a bandh, but the markets stayed closed.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) reported that some members of the Sangathan rally began throwing stones when the police stopped them from taking a different route than the one approved for the rally. According to him, police had to use a gentle lathi charge to subdue the demonstrators. According to Shrivastava, the incident on Thursday injured 27 individuals, including eight police officers. The mosque in the Barahat neighbourhood is an unlawful building on government property, according to the demonstrators. Nonetheless, the district administration has made it clear that the mosque is historic and was constructed on Muslim property.
The Uttarkashi District Magistrate's Office issued a notice, referring to a report from Mukesh Chand Ramola, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Bhatwadi, to provide clarification. A memorandum seeking action against attempts to sabotage communal amity in Uttarkashi and other districts of the state was addressed by CPI District Council officials to Governor Lt Gen Gurmeet Singh (retd) and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
Hindu organisations in Uttarkashi attempted to incite hatred against a certain population, and similar attempts are being made in other Uttarakhand districts, according to the memorandum, which called for prompt action to stop this. In Dehradun, senior Congress leader Harish Rawat expressed his concern about similar occurrences. Rawat told reporters that the issue should be handled in a way that complies with the law.
