According to news agency PTI, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that more than 1.59 lakh individuals have been designated as 'foreigners' in the state up to now. Sarma further stated that an additional 96,000 individuals have been classified as 'Doubtful' voters.
During the assembly session, Assam Chief Minister Sarma addressed a query posed by opposition AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam. Sarma disclosed that there are currently 100 functioning Foreigners' Tribunals in the state, responsible for adjudicating citizenship matters concerning D-voters. He stated that as of December 31, 2023, these tribunals have declared 1,59,353 individuals as foreigners.
The Assam Chief Minister provided additional information, stating that the Foreigners' Tribunals had resolved a total of 3,37,186 cases by the conclusion of the previous year. He added that as of the same period, 96,149 cases remained pending before various FTs across the state.
Responding to a query posed by Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, Chief Minister Sarma disclosed that according to available data, the state currently harbours 96,987 individuals classified as D-voters.
In response to a query from Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Chief Minister Sarma revealed that discussions with the central government are underway to provide relief to approximately 2.7 million residents of the state. These individuals have been unable to obtain Aadhaar cards due to the biometrics locking process implemented during the National Register of Citizens updating procedure.
Sarma stated, "I am in consultation with the Centre on this and hopefully something positive will happen soon. But we can’t go against SC orders. If required, we may have to approach the SC at some time to address the issue."
Sarma's remarks underscore the complex nature of the situation, balancing the imperative to provide relief to affected residents with adherence to legal mandates. The outcome of these deliberations remains uncertain, but the government's commitment to finding a solution underscores its dedication to addressing the concerns of Assam's residents.
