In a significant humanitarian effort, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Ghariyal departed from Visakhapatnam carrying 442 metric tonnes of essential food supplies for Myanmar, which was recently struck by a devastating earthquake. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed the development on Tuesday, emphasising India's commitment to assisting its neighbour in times of crisis.
Jaishankar also announced that the Indian Army field hospital unit has been established in Mandalay to provide medical support to those affected by the disaster. Taking to the social media platform X, he shared, "Operation Brahma—Indian Navy ship INS Ghariyal departs from Visakhapatnam with 442 metric tonnes of essential food items."
Humanitarian Aid Under 'Operation Brahma'
The Indian government's relief mission, named Operation Brahma, is aimed at providing urgent assistance to Myanmar. As part of this effort, the Indian Air Force (IAF) also dispatched a C-130J aircraft earlier in the day from Delhi, carrying an additional 16 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including rice and other essential food supplies.
Jaishankar further elaborated on the mission, stating, "Operation Brahma—Indian Air Force C-130J departs for Mandalay from Delhi this morning carrying 16 tonnes of essential humanitarian aid, rice, and essential food items."
India’s Continued Support to Myanmar
This mission underscores India’s proactive approach in providing emergency relief to Myanmar, a neighbouring country with which it shares close historical and diplomatic ties. The Indian Army’s field hospital in Mandalay is now fully operational, ensuring immediate medical care for earthquake survivors.
India has consistently extended humanitarian aid to Myanmar in times of need. The latest relief effort comes as part of broader regional cooperation and disaster response initiatives.
With INS Ghariyal en route to Myanmar, India continues to reaffirm its role as a dependable partner in the region. The swift response through Operation Brahma highlights India's readiness to assist its neighbours in times of crisis. Further updates on the relief efforts are expected as the Indian Navy and Air Force continue their mission to deliver essential aid to the affected areas.
