In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the average margin of victory has decreased compared to both the 2019 elections and those held before then. A smaller number of winning candidates received more than 50% of the votes in their constituencies.
According to the Association for Democratic Reforms, in the 2019 elections, the average share of votes won by the victorious candidates was 52.65%, whereas in 2024, it dropped to 50.58%. Additionally, the winners in 2024 secured an average of 33.44% of the registered voters, slightly lower than the 35.46% recorded in 2019.
In 2019, 51% of the winners surpassed the halfway mark in votes polled, totaling 279 winners. However, in 2024, this number decreased to 49%, with 263 winners achieving this milestone. A detailed examination of party-wise performance shows that out of 239 BJP winners, 75 (31%) secured less than 50% of the vote share.
Among the Congress winners, 57 out of 99 (58%) secured victory with less than 50% of the votes. The Samajwadi Party saw 32 out of 37 winners (86%) achieving less than 50% of the votes, while for the Trinamool Congress, 21 out of 29 winners (72%) fell into this category. Similarly, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had 14 out of 22 winners (64%) securing less than 50% of the votes. Interestingly, the Congress had the highest number of winners with less than 10% of the victory margin, followed by the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and DMK.
Despite a decrease in overall seats, BJP candidates continued to receive higher vote shares compared to other parties. The BJP was notable for having five candidates who secured victories with more than 50% of the vote margin. These included prominent figures such as Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, CR Patil, Amit Shah, Biplab Kumar Deb, and Shankar Lalwani.
In contrast, Shiv Sena's Ravindra Dattaram, MP for Mumbai North West, won by a slim margin of just 48 votes, while Congress's Adoor Prakash from Attingal, Kerala, secured victory with a margin of 684 votes.
Out of the total 543 winners, 253 emerged victorious with a vote margin of less than 10%. This group comprised 100 BJP MPs, 55 from Congress, 27 from the Samajwadi Party, and 13 from the Trinamool Congress.
The financial status of candidates was a crucial factor in determining election outcomes. Out of the winners, 54 out of 503 crorepati candidates defeated the non-crorepati runners-up. Remarkably, five of these winners achieved victories with margins exceeding 30%. Shankar Lalwani of the BJP from Indore stands out with an impressive 64.54% margin of victory.
On the flip side, 31 out of 39 winners who were not Crorepati candidates managed to defeat Crorepati runners-up. Among them, two winners achieved a margin of victory exceeding 30%. Bharatbhai Manubhai Sutariya of the BJP from Amreli stands out, winning with an impressive margin of 36.63%.
