Major diplomatic win: One of the 17 Indian crew members on board ship seized by Iran returns

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed through an official statement that Ann Tessa Joseph from Thrissur, Kerala, one of the 17 Indian crew members aboard the Israel-linked cargo ship 'MSC Aries', seized by Iran on April 13, has safely returned to her homeland. This development marks a significant diplomatic victory for New Delhi.
The Indian deck cadet arrived at Cochin International Airport and was greeted by the Regional Passport Officer of Cochin.
According to MEA, Indian deck cadet Ms. Ann Tessa Joseph from Thrissur, Kerala, who was among the Indian crew members of the container vessel MSC Aries, has safely arrived at Cochin International Airport, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Indian Mission in Tehran and the Iranian Government. Ms. Joseph was welcomed at the airport by the Regional Passport Officer, Cochin.
Following the seizure of the container vessel, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, addressing the release of the 17 Indian crew members.
Jaishankar posted on X that he had spoken to Iranian FM @Amirabdolahian that evening. He raised the issue of releasing the 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries and discussed the current regional situation. Emphasis was placed on the importance of avoiding escalation, exercising restraint, and prioritising diplomatic solutions. Both parties agreed to maintain ongoing communication.
The MEA informed that the Indian Mission in Tehran maintains communication with the remaining 16 Indian crew members of the container vessel currently under Iranian control. According to the MEA release, the crew members, who are in good health, stay in contact with their families back home.
The Israel-linked cargo ship, carrying 17 Indian nationals, was seized by Iran on April 13. According to The Times of Israel, citing an Iranian news agency, the container ship was seized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy near the Strait of Hormuz.
