The chief advisor to Bangladesh's interim government Muhammad Yunus held a meeting with Alex Soros on Wednesday. Soros is the son of American billionaire and philanthropist George Soros.
Alex called Yunus an "old friend of my father" during the meeting and commended him for leading Bangladesh toward a future based on "equity and fairness." "Delighted to see an old friend of my father and the foundation, Nobel prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus, interim leader of Bangladesh, who stepped in to lead Bangladesh towards a peaceful future based on equity and fairness,” he wrote on Instagram to express his feelings.
This meeting came after Sheikh Hasina-led government was overthrown. The longstanding Awami League leader was removed earlier this year as a result of student protests that spread widely and developed into a significant anti-government movement. On August 8, Yunus took office as the leader of the provisional administration following Hasina's departure and the dissolution of parliament.
Amidst national political turmoil, Hasina purportedly claimed that the US was involved in the demonstrations, asserting that she would have been able to hold onto power if she had given up control of Saint Martin Island to the US. US officials, however, brushed these accusations off as "laughable" and "absolutely false."
While addressing the UN General Assembly, Yunus praised the youth-led demonstrations that resulted in Hasina's overthrow and denounced her government as "autocratic" and "undemocratic." He conveyed the hope that a better future for Bangladesh would be shaped by the people's collective resolve. Protests broke out outside the UN Headquarters during Yunus's speech, despite his calls for progress; the demonstrators were strongly against his leadership.
