On September 17th, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reaffirmed his government's commitment to establishing a medical college in each of the state's 30 districts. Speaking at the annual conference of the Odisha Medical Service Association (OMSA) in Balasore, Majhi highlighted the importance of filling vacant doctor positions throughout the state.
He also encouraged the medical community to work diligently and uphold the public's trust in the healthcare system.
The chief minister criticised the previous BJD government for neglecting the health sector, highlighting that out of 15,774 sanctioned doctor positions, 5,765 have remained vacant for a long time. He also pointed out that the former administration had appointed only 443 doctors on an ad hoc and contractual basis.
"Our government's priority is to fill all the vacant posts soon and upgrade medical services in the state. Besides doctors, nurses also play a crucial role in providing treatment to the people," Mohan Charan Majhi stated, as reported by news agency PTI.
"We will establish a medical college in each district," he added.
He noted that his government has increased the health department's budget by 32 percent for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Furthermore, the chief minister emphasised the government's commitment to providing quality healthcare for all, stating that the Ayushman Bharat scheme is ready for implementation but had previously been withheld from the people of Odisha for political reasons.
Addressing the demands of the Odisha Medical Service Association (OMSA), the chief minister promised to address issues related to doctors' incentives and housing soon. He also assured the medical community of a safe working environment, free from fear.
