Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered a judicial investigation into the alleged torture of an Army officer and his fiancée while they were held in a Bhubaneswar police station. The CM stated that the state government is committed to taking strict action against any individuals or officials found guilty.
The chief minister issued the order for a judicial investigation following a meeting with senior officers, revenue minister Suresh Pujari, law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, and deputy chief minister K V Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, according to PTI.
A statement from the Chief Minister's Office stated that Justice Chittaranjan Das will oversee the judicial inquiry and that the report will be submitted in 60 days. The Majhi government has also asked the Orissa High Court to oversee the Delhi Police's Crime Branch's investigation. CM Majhi emphasised the need for the rule of law and stated that the Indian Army is respected by the state government. The CMO stated in its statement, “The state government is fully concerned about the dignity, safety, and rights of women.”
When the Army officer and his fiancée went to the Bharatpur police station on September 15 to file a complaint of road rage, they claimed to have been heckled by some young people from the area. But the couple and a few police officers got into a verbal fight, and then the woman and the officer were allegedly attacked.
The state government suspended five police officers associated with the incident on the charges of torturing the Army officer and sexually harassing the woman. The youths who were accused of harassing the couple were reportedly detained and brought before the court, according to the state government. Leader of the Opposition and Biju Janata Dal chief Naveen Patnaik demanded a court-monitored SIT investigation into the incident, and the opposition party also called for a bandh in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, September 24.
