India's National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, on the sidelines of the BRICS NSA meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia. During their interaction, Doval conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's message to Putin regarding his visit to Ukraine and meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Speaking to Putin, Ajit Doval wrote, “As Prime Minister told you during the telephone talk that he was keen to brief you about his visit to Ukraine and meeting with President Zelenskyy and he wanted me to come specially and personally to brief you about the talks which were held in a very close format… it was only the two leaders, he had his two persons with him… I happen to be with the Prime Minister, I attended that conversation…”
The meeting between Putin and Doval took place during the Indian NSA’s visit to Russia for the BRICS National Security Advisors' conference. During the interaction, Putin suggested holding a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi on 22 October, at the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan, to review the outcomes of their previous discussions and explore future opportunities.
During the conversation, President Putin highlighted the successful development of the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. He emphasised the significance of security matters in their bilateral relations and expressed gratitude to the Indian side for continuing dialogue in this area, according to a readout from the Kremlin.
Doval's visit follows Prime Minister Modi's diplomatic efforts to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. During his trip to Kyiv in August, Modi shared "interesting ideas" with Zelenskyy, which had been discussed during his July meeting with Putin. Doval, who accompanied Modi on both the Russia and Ukraine visits, plays a key role in these peace initiatives, which aim to find a resolution to the conflict.
In recent days, there have been increasing calls for India to play a potential role in facilitating peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, given New Delhi's strong relations with both countries.
