After N. Biren Singh stepped down as Manipur's Chief Minister, the National People's Party (NPP), a key coalition partner, pledged its support to the BJP. The working president of NPP, Sheikh Noorul Hassan, said, "NPP has withdrawn support from N Biren Singh goverment. We do not believe in his leadership because of his failure to restore normalcy and peace in Manipur."
"His resignation from the CM post is a welcome step towards restoring peace and normalcy in the state. We are a part of the NDA alliance at the Centre; we will always cooperate and work with BJP as part of NDA to bring normalcy to the state," he further said.
Meanwhile, Y Khemchand Singh from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Manipur said on Monday that all members will abide by the decision made by the party's high command.
Singh emphasised that the primary focus would be restoring normalcy in the state, especially between the Kuki and Meitei communities.
"We accept the decision taken by the high command. The problem is gone. The problem we are facing now is how to bring back normalcy. As per the system of the party, whatever the party's high command decides, we have to accept it. All the members will accept the party's decision," when asked about who would replace Biren Singh, Y Khemchand Singh responded to ANI.
On Sunday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhawan, almost two years after violence engulfed the state. He was joined by BJP president A. Sharda, the party's North East Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra and at least 19 MLAs.
In his resignation letter Singh wrote, "It has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur so far,". He added, "I am extremely grateful to the Central government for timely actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interest of every single Manipuri ".
The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, after the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) organised a rally. The protest was triggered by a Manipur High Court ruling that directed the state government to consider granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community.
