Last week, President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea in an official state capacity, marking his first visit to the country in nearly 25 years. During this visit, Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a defence pact in Pyongyang on June 19.
The military treaty outlines that if either of the two nations faces a state of war due to an armed invasion by one or more individual states, the other party is obligated to provide immediate military and other forms of assistance using all available resources at its disposal.
According to a report by the Kyiv Post, North Korea has announced that it will dispatch a military engineering unit to aid Russian forces in the Donetsk region. Troops are anticipated to arrive as soon as next month following the agreement between the two nations.
Since the leaders met in Russia in September, the DPRK has reportedly supplied nearly two million rounds of artillery ammunition and rockets for multiple launch rocket systems to Russia. There are also allegations of ballistic missile transfers. The deployment of North Korean combat troops is raising concerns about the escalation of the conflict, particularly as experts believe Pyongyang's sappers may face challenges in the deployment.
During a briefing on June 25, Pentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder criticised the deployment, questioning the rationale behind sending North Korean troops into what he termed an illegal war against Ukraine.
Ryder expressed concern over the potential for North Korean military personnel facing significant casualties in a conflict where Russian forces have already suffered heavy losses.
He also noted that the United States is closely monitoring the increasing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
