On Wednesday (IST), US President Donald Trump stated that "no one is expelling anyone from Gaza," addressing concerns over his proposed plan for the region. He made this remark during a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at the White House, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Trump's comments came after his administration proposed moving Gazans and allowing the US to take control of the area for reconstruction. This plan has faced criticism, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has shown support for it. Martin, who has called for a ceasefire in Gaza, also demanded the release of hostages still held by Hamas since the October 2023 attacks. Before meeting with Trump, he urged for more humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza. Martin issued a statement amid tense relations between Israel and Ireland. In December 2024, Ireland’s anti-Israel policy pushed Israel to close its embassy in the country. Israel had made this decision after a week Ireland backed South Africa’s action against the former in the International Court of Justice. South Africa accused Israel of genocide.
"The actions and antisemitic rhetoric used by Ireland against Israel is rooted in the delegitimisation and demonisation of the Jewish state, along with double standards. Ireland has crossed every red line in its relations with Israel," Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said while announcing the closure of the embassy in Ireland. Following his election, Trump called for the conclusion of the war and the relocation of all Gazans to allow the United States to occupy the territory and reconstruct the strip. Trump went into further detail about his reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip during a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that the United States would be in charge of "dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site and getting rid of the destroyed buildings."
Trump stated that the US plans to support economic development in Gaza, aiming to provide unlimited jobs and housing for its residents. To achieve this, he requested assistance from other Middle Eastern countries to accommodate Gazans. On Wednesday, Arab foreign ministers agreed to continue discussions and will work with Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to coordinate Egypt's proposed Gaza reconstruction plan during a meeting in Doha.
